Semester 9

Course: Bio-Informatics

Course Code: Υ9
Course Level: Undergratuate
Obligatory/Elective: Elective
Semester: 9
Division: Division of Computers
Group: Group A
ECTS Credits: 5
Hours Per Week: 4
Website: eclass.uowm.gr/courses/ICTE162/
Language: Greek
Content:

.Introduction to basic biological terms. Biomolecules DNA and RNA. Protein structure. Biological databases. Substitution matrices. Dynamic algorithms. Pair-wise sequence alignment. Multiple sequence alignment. Domains and motifs in biological molecules. Introduction to evolution theory. Phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic tree construction using UPMGA, Fitch-Margoliash & Neighbor-joining algorithms. DNA microarrays. Heuristic algorithms FASTA and BLAST.

Learning Outcomes:

The students at the end of semester should be familiar with informatics essential for biological data analysis. More specifically, the students should be able to retrieve, store, analyse and model biological information. In order to achieve this the understanding of algorithms used in bioinformatics for sequence comparison or phylogenetic tree construction becomes the main expected learning outcome of this module.

Pre-requirements:

-

Teaching Methods:

2 hr teaching and 2 hr laboratory exercises

Validation:

60% final exam, 20% lab exam, 20% short projects (6-7) during the semester
